We are Geologist too!

We have been exploring rocks and minerals. We learned about how rocks are made over the years from sand, other rocks, minerals, and fossils. Geologist find fossils from animals and plants inside rocks when they are broken apart. In order to mimic the process of exploration of a geologist we used mock rocks. Mock rocks are hand made rocks from sand, flour, salt and water. We discovered some of our own little treasures inside our rocks.

We reviewed our safety procedures and once we were all fitted with our safety goggles, work mats and tools (pick and magnifying glass) we began the process of exploring our rocks.

Subtraction with Regrouping Strategy

Below you will find a resource to help your child with subtraction with regrouping. This is a visual to show you what we did in class with manipulatives in a hands on activity when we learned subtraction with regrouping. Dimes and pennies can be used as manipulatives to represent 10s and 1s when working with subtraction problems that require regrouping. On homework and classwork, the student will need to show his/her work.

We had a wonderful Winter Party before our Winter Break. Thank you to all the parents that organized the fun activities, sent in supplies and helped run the stations. The kids had a fabulous time!

Welcome back!!

Welcome back for the second semester! I hope everyone had a wonderful Winter Break! I know I enjoyed spending time with family and friends over the holiday. Even though the break was wonderful I was ready to get back to school to your little darlings.
Our first week back was a fun and busy one! We began with a review of our classroom expectations and Daily 5 expectations. On Thursday, January 6 we had a wonderful author visit from Ellen Leventhall and on Friday, January 7 the whole school participated in a Taste Off during health fitness.
In the next couple of weeks I hope to have the blog up to date with our classroom information. I appreciate your patience while I figure all of this out.

Bucket Fillers

We are still continuing our work on Bucket Filling. Each day we write in our bucket journal to close out our day and reflect on the job we have done helping others throughout our day. We also reflect on our own feelings. This has helped us become more aware of being kind to others as well what we ourselves need to feel good about our day.
If you would like to read the book yourself here are a few titles we have used in class: (I linked them to the Barnes and Noble Site so you would be able to look up more information if you wished)

Lets get this Blog started...

Okay so it is time to get this blog up and really running. Thank you for your patience while I get your kids settled into second grade (as well as get myself settled in). I am really enjoying your kids- they are such a smart and fun group.
Over the next week or I hope to:
Update pictures on the blog,
Give you updated information on our classroom activities,
Give you more resources for extended learning activities in all subject areas,
and give you a chance to have open discussions with myself and the other parents on the blog.
